U.S. President Donald Trump has unveiled new plans to deal with the Russian threat to Ukraine. Today he announced the U.S. will send 'top-of-the-line-weapons" to Ukraine via NATO, while also threatening severe tariffs if a deal to end the war is not reached within 50 days.
We haven't heard yet if Vladimir Putin has reached for the black felt marker for the calendar. But stay tuned.
The U.S. President continued.
"We want to make sure Ukraine can do what it wants to do," Trump said following a meeting with Nato chief Mark Rutte in Washington.
The European countries will send Kyiv their Patriot air defense systems. The United States will replace those systems with new shipments.
The tariff component consists of placing 100% secondary tariffs targeting Russia's remaining trading partners if a peace deal with Ukraine was not reached in 50 days. This puts tremendous pressure not only on Russia, but those who continue to trade with them.
The oil and gas sector represent 60% of Russia's exports. Placing more tariffs will make doing business difficult.
In the past few weeks, the U.S. president showed disinterest in continuing peace talks, after Russia continued to blast Ukraine with missiles, drones, and aircraft.
