President Joe Biden announced today that he will ban new offshore oil and gas drilling in most U.S. coastal waters.
“My decision reflects what coastal communities, businesses and beachgoers have known for a long time: that drilling off these coasts could cause irreversible damage to places we hold dear and is unnecessary to meet our nation’s energy needs,”
“As the climate crisis continues to threaten communities across the country and we are transitioning to a clean energy economy, now is the time to protect these coasts for our children and grandchildren,” he said.
With these actions, Biden is looking to protect the 625 million acers of federal waters - which will require an act of Congress to repeal.
Trump replied by stating: "I will undo the drilling ban and will be changed on day one." and "I will unban it immediately. I have the right to unban it."
A strange rule exists in the U.S. since 2022 - it states that under the 2022 Climate Law, the government must offer 60 million acres of offshore oil & gas leases in a one year period before it can offer offshore wind leases.
President Biden has approved the Willow oil project in Alaska, to which he was condemned by many environmental groups.
It should be an interesting time for America in the next few months. Energy Dominance is one of the key areas President-elect Trump will be seeking to establish.
