California Wildfires: Before and After

5 people dead and 10,000 structures destroyed by fire, leaving 130,000 people stranded under an evacuation order. One of the fastest-moving wildfires in history has ravaged the hills around Los Angeles, California.

The hurricane gust winds whipped up the fire to an incredible intensity, and if you examine the picture above, you can clearly see many homes and areas completely destroyed.

Pasadena fire chief Chad Augustin, said the city water was stretched thin and power outages wrecked havoc on people who live nearby. Chad said: “Tonight, we have very mild wind conditions where we can get aircraft and a ton of additional resources getting their hands around this fire,” Augustin said. “That’s what gives me confidence that we’re going to get a handle on this fire.”

After years and years of draught, emergency services have struggled to contain these wildfires, to the point where every year, there is a major catastrophic fire in California.

On a good note, President Biden has said they will cover the damages. Biden announced from the White House today that the federal government would pay for 100% regions firefighting needs for the next 180 days -- to help contain and eliminate the fires.

“We are with you,” Mr. Biden said. “We are not going anywhere.”

The fire is roughly twice the size of Manhattan - or 29,000 acres. Places where structures existed have been levelled by charred, burned ground.

The red sky, and smell of woodsmoke permeates the area. The death toll could rise due to the extremely poor air quality in the area.

Damages are estimated to exceed $50 billion dollars, causing massive losses for the insurance industry.
