United States of America President Donald Trump has announced he will place a 25% border tax starting on February 1st.
President Trump said to reporters today he is doing this to address the large amounts of undocumented migrants and fentanyl that enters the US border.
It also includes the trade deficits between the two countries.
"With China, I'm also thinking about something because they're sending fentanyl into our country, and because of that, they're causing us hundreds of thousands of deaths," Trump said.
"So China is going to end up paying a tariff also for that, and we're in the process of doing that."
Canada and Mexico have said they would respond to US tariffs. Both countries have stated they would do more to respond to importation of illegal drugs.
40% of the oil that goes to US refineries is imported from Canada.
President Trump held off on his threat to add 60% tariffs to Chinese-made goods. The President requested an official study of the issue before making an informed decision.
