If you've lived under a rock for a few years, this term might be unfamiliar to you. If we change the name to 'investment' or 'romance' scams, then you'll understand how devious criminals are today. Sadly, there is no limits as to how far criminals go to achieve ripping you off.
Having used Tinder for about a month now, I've encountered this type of scheme. At first, these people - always pretty young women, who initiate contact and appear to be 'nice'.
A few days later, they slide in a request for either your cell phone or WhatsApp account. If if you're dumb enough to provide this information, they'll start texting you invitations to their investment scheme.
They start low - maybe $25 and work their way up. They may even offer you ridiculous jobs like doing Yelp reviews for restaurants - simply placing orders and putting in fake reviews. But wait. There's more.
The crypto currency investment scams are everywhere. And that's exactly what they want: Dump money into their bitcoin wallet, and watch as your money disappears.
Oh sure, they offer you nice graphs showing your payout ratio. And they might even pay you back once or twice. But watch out, that $1,000 or $10,000 you invest is never coming. And that's where the term pig butchering appears.
The scammers use social media sites like X, Instagram, Facebook, and even TikTok & Tinder to achieve their goals. Some are organized into actual scamming companies with daily quotas.
Their money is siphoned and distributed to organized criminals around the world. A few people lost several hundred thousand dollars on these scams. They promised them the world, and delivered absolutely nothing.
The real goal is having you trust the scammers - she couldn't do this to me, could she? In reality, that person is a man, usually located on the other side of the world, talking to hundreds of victims every day. They've gotten pretty good at scamming people.
In the sad reality of it all, most don't realize they've lost it until it's too late. And then, the scammers will taunt you.
How cruel. Be safe out there.
