Tik Tok Ban: Banned on January 19, 2025

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld a law requiring ByteDance - their parent company - to sell by January 19, 2025 or face a nationwide ban.

It was a unanimous decision, and the court rejected TikTok's claim that the law violated the First Amendment rights.

President Joe Biden said he will not enforce the law. Donald Trump, the next U.S. President on Monday, is considering an executive order to reverse the ban.

One of the rarest court rulings has happened - where an application is considered a national security risk.

The amount of personal data collected by TikTok is not known. What ByteDance does with this information is a mystery. The only way around this ban is to use your phone inside a country's network where there is no ban yet - like Canada or Europe.

People could also side-load applications onto their phones, but this is very risky. No one knows if the application has been tampered with, and if it contains malware.

Critics claim the concerns about TikTok are not true. Social Media experts have attached to TikTok and gathered millions of followers. With over 149 million U.S. citizens using the application, it becomes a question of who will replace TikTok - and what application will succeed where others have failed.

From a financial perspective, it would be insane to continue to hold TikTok's data on servers for years. We could expect a continuous wipe of information due to the cost of storage. And what value could be obtained from users habits, other than knowing when the McRib is on sale in the United States of America?

It should be an interesting day on Monday, indeed.
