Pope Francis is expected to stay in hospital much longer, as he enters the 4th day in the hospital. The pontiff is recovering from a polymicrobial infection of the respiratory tract, and must undergo more treatment.
The Pope continues to be free of fever, and is continuing with medical care. He received the Eucharist and dedicated himself to work and reading texts. Pope Francis is touched by the numerous messages of affection and closeness he continues to receive."
Over the past few days before being admitted to the hospital, Pope Francis had some difficulty breathing and had asked aides to read speeches aloud on his behalf. Due to having part of his lungs removed as a young man, he has been susceptible to respiratory infections.
He could not participate in the last Good Friday event, due to having a 'light flu' according to the Vatican.
In March of 2023, Pope Francis was admitted to the hospital for 3 nights with bronchitis, and it was cured with antibiotics.
He has also had a hernia operation in 2023, along with surgery for diverticulitis in 2021. Due to his knee pain, the Pope had to begin using a wheelchair in 2022.
Unfortunately, the pontiff has fallen a couple of times in the past few months - once in January and also in December. There is no expectation of Pope Francis resigning, and will likely continue his work until he cannot anymore.
We wish the pontiff a speedy recovery during this difficult moment in his life.
