WASHINGTON, D.C.
Today in Washington, D.C., President Trump signed an executive order instructing the Department of Government Efficiency to work with federal agencies and reduce the federal government workforce.
President Trump's mandate is to reduce the size of government to make it more efficient. He also seeks to limit the amount of new hires, and that they will not hire more than one employee for every 4 that leave their post.
While speaking to reporters from within the White House today, President Trump was accompanied by Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and DOGE Chairman. Convinced that 'horrible stuff is going on' in the U.S. Federal Government, President Trump said "I hope that the court system is going to allow us to do what we have to do." as he prepares to battle against the justices in the court systems.
President Trump seeks to cut the federal workforce by at least 2 million people by September 1st. He seeks to bring people back into the "office" to work instead of allowing work-from-home.
Cutting $2 trillion dollars from the U.S. budget will be very difficult indeed. President Trump offered 'deferred resignations' in which people would be paid, including benefits, up to September.
About 65,000 federal employees have accepted the offer - far below the 2 million he sought. This works out to approximately 3.25% of his 2,000,000 workforce cut goal.
"We have too many people. We have office spaces occupied by 4% – nobody showing up to work because they were told not to," Trump said.
Government waste has been a target by many previous U.S. Presidents.
Six Categories of Waste
The six categories of wasteful and unnecessary spending are:
- Programs that should be devolved to state and local governments;
- Programs that could be better performed by the private sector;
- Mistargeted programs whose recipients should not be entitled to government benefits;
- Outdated and unnecessary programs;
- Duplicative programs; and
- Inefficiency, mismanagement, and fraud.
