Multiple news sources have confirmed that Pope Francis has suffered a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis, with doctors giving him oxygen.

His condition remains critical. "Today's blood tests also showed plateletopenia, associated with anemia, which required the administration of hemotransfusions," the Vatican said in a statement. "The Holy Father continues to be alert and spent the day in an armchair although in more pain than yesterday."

Pope Francis has been hospitalized since February 14, and was originally diagnosed with bronchitis, then later pneumonia.

The Pope is 88 years old, and was born on December 17, 1936. He is the second-oldest living pope in modern history after Pope Leo XIII, who past away in 1903 at age 93.
