Trade War with the EU?

During President Trump's first cabinet meeting he mentioned applying a 25% tariff against the EU -  stating the 27-country union was formed to 'screw the United States' and that 'We have made a decision and we'll be announcing it very soon. It'll be 25%"

The EU was quick to respond, saying: 

“The EU will react firmly and immediately against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade, including when tariffs are used to challenge legal and non-discriminatory policies. The EU will always protect European businesses, workers and consumers from unjustified tariffs.”

French President Emmanuel Macron, said '“Come on, you cannot have a trade war with China and Europe at the same time. I hope I convinced him." and earlier this month “The EU sees no justification for the imposition of tariffs on its exports. We will react to protect the interests of European businesses, workers and consumers from unjustified measures."

Trump later wrote “The tariffs will drive massive amounts of auto manufacturing to MICHIGAN, a State which I just easily one [sic] in the Presidential Election."
