Why The Egg Shortage?

If you've noticed one thing lately, is that eggs are either very expensive, or completely out of stock in American stores. Trader Joes, one of the largest grocery stores in America, confirmed they are limiting how many eggs their customers can buy each day.

"Due to ongoing issues with the supply of eggs, we are currently limiting egg purchases to one dozen per customer, per day. This is for all Trader Joe's stores across America."

Why is this happening?

More than 150 million birds have been killed in an attempt to stem the bird flu virus, H5N1. This has caused egg prices to skyrocket and availability to be extremely low.

Costco and Sprouts have implemented purchase limits too. Views of empty egg shelfs have graced social media in the past few weeks.

Costco put up a helpful sign for their customers:  "Attention: Due to supply challenges caused by the highly pathogenic avian influenza, shell eggs and egg products may be short or cut from delivery orders without notice. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

It appears the maximum number of eggs you can buy is 5 large containers.

Rewind time when the COVID-19 pandemic was in place: People hustled to their grocery stores to purchase toilet paper and paper towels, resulting in panic-buying.

We do not know how long this egg shortage will last, but assuming at least 150 million animals were put down humanely - it will take almost a year before adequate stock is replenished.
