Good bye and so long: 23andme.com is going out of business, filing for bankruptcy in California. There has been low demand for their DNA testing services lately, and after a 2023 data breach, it's reputation is at zero.
At one point, the company had 15 million customers worldwide and gathered an impressive amount of DNA from them. They filed Chapter 11 on Sunday to “facilitate a sale process to maximize the value of its business.” 23andMe is seeking authorization from a bankruptcy court in Missouri to “sell substantially all of its assets.”
It had a valuation of about $6 billion back in it's glory, but after losing $174 million in the first nine months of it's fiscal year - game over.
Customers should have the option to remove their dna data - before the company is sold for scraps to the highest bidder.
Their website is currently up and still advertising services. We don't suggest anyone purchase them, due to the fact the company has completely shut down.
