25% Tariffs on Mexican and Canadian Imports on Tuesday

Things are going to be more expensive for items from the U.S. and Canada soon. President Trump announced that a 25% tariff would be applied to all Canadian and Mexican goods.

“Tomorrow — tariffs 25% on Canada and 25% on Mexico. And that’ll start,” Trump told reporters in the Roosevelt Room. “They’re going to have to have a tariff.”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat representing Minnesota, said: “This is a crazy way to handle our allies, right? He’s literally reaching out to Russia at the same time that he’s putting a 25% tariff on Canadian goods,” she said.

It appears the good will and reciprocal trade that both the U.S. and Canada has enjoyed for decades could be coming to an abrupt end.

The cozy relationship that Canada has enjoyed for decades appears to be abruptly ending. After calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "Governor" more than once, and repeatedly threatening to annex Canada and make it the 51st state - makes it clear the administration does not believe in equitable trade deals.

The next hammer to fall will likely be with the Economic Union group, where, again, Trump has threatened reciprocal tariffs against all imports.

Canada has made it clear they intend to apply tariffs against this unfair taxation.

“If Trump is imposing tariffs, we are ready,” said Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly. “We are ready with $155 billion worth of tariffs and we’re ready with the first tranche of tariffs, which is $30 billion.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford came out swinging today, announcing on a live Canadian broadcast:

"If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do anything, including cutting off their energy — with a smile on my face," Ford said during his first news conference since winning a third majority last week. Ontario is a major electricity exporter to New York, Michigan and Minnesota.

"They need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard? We've got to go back twice as hard," Ford continued.

"So please, please work with us, or we're going to legislate it. And start onshoring goods from — you're bringing (goods) around the world — there's nothing we can't build here in Ontario, absolutely nothing," he said.

"We'll respond strongly, and we don't want to," he said. "On the critical minerals, I will stop shipments going into the U.S. for nickel. It will shut down manufacturing."

Speaking to reporters at the White House Monday afternoon, Trump said the United States has been "a laughingstock for years and years" and he needs to take trade action against its continental neighbours.

But who exactly is laughing at the United States of America from Canada?

We have absolutely no idea.
