A federal judge has ruled that 6 federal agencies must re-hire thousands of workers who were let go last week on probationary status or fired. This was part of the Trump Administration's plan to downsize the U.S. government.
Judge William H. Aslup of the U.S. District Court for Northern District of California ruled today. He said the Trump Administration's firing of probationary workers was done unlawfully by the OPM - Office of Personnel Management. Only the individual agencies have the authority to terminate workers.
He also directed the Treasury and Veteran's Affairs, Agriculture, Defense, Energy, and Interior Departments to comply with the order. He was also willing to expand the decision and apply it to other agencies where the extend of harm has not been recorded yet.
“It is a sad day when our government would fire some good employee and say it was based on performance when they know good and well that’s a lie,” he said.
“It was a sham in order to try to avoid statutory requirements,” he added.
A restraining order was also set last month further blocking any further unlawful firings and terminations.
