As predicted, the tariffs applied by the Trump Administration to Canada has caused chaos in the free markets. In what could be described as economic warfare, the strategic decision of applying financial pressure to countries in order to win something.
Unfortunately, it's caused a massive backlash not only within Canada, but also the United States of America.
Everything from fruits to vegetables will become immediately more expensive. The unnecessary trade war erupted when President Trump enacted has triggered a global trade war against Canada, Mexico, and China - to state a few.
If the EU thinks they are safe from tariffs they have another thing coming. The President has already said he would look at applying tariffs against countries that apply taxation on any goods arriving into their collective.
Texas will be hit hard by the tariffs due to the amount of business it does with Canada, Mexico, and China.
Some say the estimated cost of these unnecessary fees will add $830 a year to your household bills.
Ontario alone will impose a 25% tariff on power it sends to 1.5 million homes in Michigan, Minnesota, and New York.
They've cancelled their StarLink satellite internet services ($100M), and yanked all red-state liquor from all Ontario liquor stores.
“There’s one person there called Donald Trump that is short-sighted on this and the American people are going to pay the price, unfortunately — they’re good people, please don’t take it out on the American people,” the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford said.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said during a news conference today:
“To my fellow Canadians, I won’t sugarcoat it. This is going to be tough, even though we’re all going to pull together because that’s what we do,” Trudeau said at a press conference in Ottawa.
“Canada will not let this unjustified decision go unanswered,” Trudeau said in a statement on Monday night, hours before the U.S. deadline.
“Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn, and should U.S. tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures,” he added.
“While we urge the U.S. administration to reconsider their tariffs, Canada remains firm in standing up for our economy, our jobs, our workers, and for a fair deal.”
“Canadians are reasonable and we are polite, but we will not back down from a fight, not when our country and the well-being of everyone in it is at stake,” he said, adding that “this is a time to hit back hard and to demonstrate that a fight with Canada will have no winners.”
It remains to be seen if President Donald Trump relaxes the unnecessary tariffs. Especially when there was rumors about his administration relaxing sanctions against Russia.
An unbelievable moment in time.
And completely unnecessary.
Trudeau said there was “absolutely no justification” for the U.S. tariffs, arguing that Canada has delivered on its promises to strengthen border security, including a $1.3-billion plan and the appointment of a new fentanyl czar.
Trump has repeatedly cited the flow of fentanyl as the reason for imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico.
Trudeau said that excuse was “completely bogus.”
"I want to speak first directly to the American people ... your government has chosen to do this to you," Trudeau said. He laid out how profoundly the ensuing trade war would hurt the American economy — noting markets are down and inflation could rise.
"Your government has chosen to put American jobs at risk at the thousands of workplaces that succeed because of materials from Canada, or because of consumers in Canada, or both," he added.
"They have chosen to raise costs for American consumers on everyday essential items like groceries and gas, on major purchases like cars and homes and everything in between," Trudeau said.
