A government shutdown might be happening this weekend if the Republican-controlled U.S. Congress fails to pass it's bill. Speaker Johnson hopes to pass this bill on Tuesday - an ambitious goal, with tax cuts and increased spending on immigration enforcement.
President Trump supports the bill. Some Democrats don't support the bill at all. They say that cuts to social security are within the 99-page bill.
Failing to pass the bill could be disastrous for the U.S. economy. The bill covers discretionary spending, law enforcement, and air traffic control - and is about 25% of the $6.75 trillion federal budget. There is spending for the social security retirement program, and $1 trillion per year on interest payments on the government's $36 trillion dollar debt.
That's 36,000 billion U.S. dollars.
There would be an increase in defense spending by $6 billion while decreasing non-defense spending by $13 billion.
