Three children and 1 adult teenager were killed when a vehicle veered off an Illinois road and rammed into an after-school camp. Officials believe the incident was not a targeted attack.
“The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but this does not appear to be a targeted attack,” state police said in a statement Tuesday.
The driver was 44-year old Marianna Akers of Chatham, who was hospitalized for evaluation - but otherwise unharmed. She was a food services employee who last worked at the Ball-Chatham school district in November 2022.
The victims are:
Rylee Britton, 18
Ainsley Johnson, 8
Alma Buhnerkempe, 7
Kathyrn Corley, 7
Unfortunately, they were all pronounced deceased at the scene by Coroner Jim Allmon.
There were 6 other children hurt, and have been hospitalized - with one in critical condition.
The camp's security camera captured the crash - showing a large SUV striking the YNOT building at high speed near 3:20 PM, and exiting the west side before coming to a stop against a pole.
"It travelled through a 78-acre farm field, arcing into a path that security cameras observed, showed it heading to our building at a high rate of speed," Loftus said. "With no apparent attempt to alter its direction, the vehicle crossed North Breckenridge and the sidewalk, continuing into our parking lot and into the East wall of our building."
