Pope Francis has died - ending his 12 year Papacy.

"Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sadness I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis," Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced on the Vatican's TV channel.

"At 7:35 this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father."

He worked in the family grocery store, played soccer, and danced tango. He attended church regularly but was not very religious until he had a powerful experience as a teenager.

In 1969, he was ordained into the priesthood being part of the Jesuits - a Catholic order known for education and missionary work. After 4 years, he was the head of the Jesuits in Argentina, then archibishop of Buenos Airies in 1998. He was Cardinal after being appointed by Pope John Paul the 2nd in 2001.

He broke from the standard Catholic stance, and authorized priests to offer informal blessings to couples who were same-sex.

"Early in his papacy, the Pope said he was not going to obsess over [opposing] gay marriage, abortion and issues like that," said Rev. Thomas Reese, a Jesuit priest and senior analyst at the U.S.-based Religion News Service. "What he did obsess over was the plight of refugees and global warming."
