"We will never, ever be a piece of property that can be bought by anyone, and that's the message I think is most important to understand," said Nielsen, who became Greenland's prime minister this April.

The new Prime Minister also said 'the island is not a piece of property that can be bought' and that the U.S. 'has not shown Greenland or Denmark any respect.'

"You can't annex other countries," was her message for the US president at the time.

It followed Vance's whirlwind visit to the territory, widely criticized in both Denmark and Greenland, in which he reiterated Trump's ambitions and claimed Copenhagen had "not done a good job" for Greenlanders.

Greenland, the world's largest island, has been controlled by Denmark for about 300 years. The island governs its own domestic affairs, but foreign and defense policy decisions are made in Copenhagen.

Most Greenlanders want to be independent and not a part of either the U.S. nor Denmark.

Fortunately, President Trump said during a speech in Congress  that 'We do not think that military force is ever going to be necessary.'
