A man stole Gov. Kristi Noem's expensive Gucci handbag yesterday, while sitting next to her at a restaurant. He used his foot to move the bag to his chair, then silently put it into his jacket, and walked out the front door of the restaurant.

Crimes like this wouldn't make the papers unless you know who the victim was. This was Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Not only was her expensive Gucci bag taken, but so was a Louis Vuitton Clemence Wallet, which retails for about $600 USD.

The thief got away with blank checks, her driver's license, medication, apartment keys, passport, DHS access badge, makeup bag, and $3,000 in cash.

More startling is how easy it was for the thief to take these items.

Be sure that the Secret Service will be reviewing video footage of the thief, and hopefully track that awful person down. Losing your wallet is dangerous: Thieves often use them to take out new credit cards, change existing credit cards, and even buy homes or cars using your credit.

It's a common theft that goes unpunished for years until the unlikely day when the thief finally gets caught - and usually, they're off the hook for their previous crimes.

Noem had left her bag on the floor - a tragic mistake. By doing this, it gave the thief an easy access by foot to pull the bag towards him. Had she kept the bag on the table, he would have been forced to jump for the bag, or run-and-steal.

Ideally, Noem should have had a money purse on her body, strapped, and yes, uncomfortable. Leave the expensive handbags at home or the private parties.

By taking luxury into restaurants, you really do risk being robbed at gunpoint.
