Today the U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the "Golden Dome" missile defense system, saying it would be operational within the end of his term in office.

This would be a next-generation system, capable of intercepting and/or destroying incoming targets at high speed ( think 33,000 MPH ). About 25 billion will kick off this project, with an estimated total cost of $188 billion U.S. dollars.

The existing systems have not kept pace with the rapid advancement of missile and hypersonic warheads.

It would be deployed across land, sea, and space. Also noted, he said that Canada has asked to be part of this system. This would in theory replace the northern monitoring station at Alert - or perhaps augment it.

The President said it would also be capable of intercepting warheads from space. Partially inspired by Israel's iron dome, a technology system that intercepts missiles since 2011.

US officials had said it will have the ability to allow the US to stop missiles at various stages of deployment: Even before they launch.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated it would cost about $542 billion over 20 years - for the space components alone.

We wouldn't be surprised if this turned into a $1 Trillion dollar project.

"There really is no current system," Trump said in the Oval Office on Tuesday. "We have certain areas of missiles and certain missile defence, but there is no system... there has never been anything like this."
