It didn't take long for U.S. President Donald Trump to apply more pressure to Harvard University. With the latest executive order, the administration has revoked the school's ability to enroll foreign students. And those students who are enrolled must transfer to other schools or leave the country.
The Department of Homeland Security announced this action today, claiming Harvard: Has created an unsafe campus environment by allowing “anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators” to assault Jewish students on campus. It also accused Harvard of coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party, saying it hosted and trained members of a Chinese paramilitary group as recently as 2024.
“This means Harvard can no longer enroll foreign students and existing foreign students must transfer or lose their legal status,” the agency said in a statement.
Harvard University has about 6,800 foreign students in Cambridge, MA - from over 100 countries.
“This retaliatory action threatens serious harm to the Harvard community and our country, and undermines Harvard’s academic and research mission,” the university said in a statement.
The only way the University can reverse this is to give DHS a list of foreign students within 72 hours. This came from Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
“This administration is holding Harvard accountable for fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus,” Noem said in a statement.
Ouch.
There is a federal antisemitism task force in place that claims the university failed to protect Jewish students from harm, and faced discrimination, during the pro-Palestinian protests.
Could this be the start of government-owned and vetted universities?
