At 5:30 AM today, a shelter-in-place alert was sent out by the Brooklyn Park Police Department. A suspect in the shooting may have been impersonating law enforcement.

Per fox9:

  • A shelter-in-place order is in effect in Brooklyn Park after two state lawmakers and their spouses were shot by someone impersonating a police officer.
  • Sources say Sen. John Hoffman and Rep. Melissa Hortman were shot. Hortman and her husband died from their injuries.
  • The shelter-in-place order is near Edinburgh Golf Course, and the at-large suspect is considered armed and dangerous.

Minnesota Governor Walz confirmed that Rep. Hortman and her husband are dead.

Brooklyn Park police "exchanged gunfire" with a suspect, who then fled, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

That suspect is still at large, and a manhunt is underway.

Brooklyn Park police say the suspect, dressed as a police officer, was at Rep. Hortman's home when they arrived. The suspect then immediately opened fire, prompting officers to return fire, before the suspect escaped.
